How To Cast A Bait Caster Far?

Last Updated on July 27, 2021

Fishing by using bait caster has its own advantage. Here casting distance can play an important role. If you want to catch a bigger fish, the higher casting distance can maximize your chance of success.

It will also minimize the chance of spooking the fish. Still, you can find out that many anglers are not optimizing this because of unbalanced equipment or poor casting technique.

So, here comes the question, how can we cast bait caster far? And how can we utilize our equipment properly to do it?

To get the highest distance, you need a proper technique first. Of course, you need to learn the most efficient way. Only learning the technique won’t be enough.

Then what will you need more? Of course, it’s a balanced equipment setting. You need to select your rod based on the lure, the right type of reel, sinker selection, line selection, and so on.

You should utilize everything and form a balance among them. You should also maintain your equipment properly, like oiling and cleaning for the best performance. And most importantly you need to practice a lot.

Casting A Bait Caster Far

Everybody knows practice makes a man perfect. Let’s find out the compilation of the best tricks to get the highest distance.

Casting A Bait Caster Far

Selection Of Rod

Select a rod that suits you best. Don’t go for a rod that is too light because if your rod is too light, it won’t have enough power to propel the bait. If your rod is too heavy, it will be equally bad. Here are few suggestions based on your need:

Selection Of Rod
  • If you want to throw a lighter lure like ¼ ounce far away, then go for a medium power rod. If your lure is ⅜ ounce, then go for a medium-heavy power rod.
  • Again, if you want to throw a heavier lure further, like ¾ ounce, then you need a powerful rod-like medium-heavy powered rod or more powerful than it.

Selection Of Reel

In the case of a reel, you need to take note of two points. Firstly, your reel should have a large line capacity, and secondly, choose a reel without level wind. Level wind increases resistance on the line when you try to cast it further.

Our purpose is to cast our bait caster further. So, you should take this point seriously. Your reel capacity should be at least 300 yards. Is it sounds like a lot?

Actually not. Imagine here you want to cast your bait more than 100 yards, and your prey won’t remain in the same place after hooked up. It can try to go a further distance from you. So, 300 yards is a reasonable choice, I think.

Selection Of Reel

Selection Of Line

The lighter, the better for casting further. But don’t go too light, which can break at the time of fishing. So, you need to choose carefully and reasonably. If possible, it’s best to go for a premium line.

Off-brand lines can be unstable and unreliable at a time. Of course, the premium line will cost you more, but it will be stronger in less diameter. When filling the baitcasting reel, you should take note that ⅛ inch of maximum spool capacity gives you enough room to thumb the spool, which prevents overrun.

Selection Of Line

Setting Fewer Brakes

Fewer brakes on reels give you more distance with better efficiency. So, to get the furthest distance turn down your brakes with a braid.

Setting Fewer Brakes

Using Braid

You can use a braid as a backing. It doesn’t add that much weight but helps to increase the casting distance. How does braid do it? It allows the spool to spin faster. So, you can already guess that result.

Can Sinker Help To Increase Casting Distance?

Yes, it can. Choose one which is aerodynamic and holds better in strong current. Here is a list of designs for you to choose easily:

Can Sinker Help To Increase Casting Distance
  • Halls
  • Grip
  • Hails
  • Pyramid
  • Bank and flat bank

These designs work well, so you can choose one without any worry.

Casting Technique

It’s one of the most important parts of this article. Just throwing hard won’t give you the best result. You need a scientific way to get the best result. For beginners, I will suggest you learn to use the Brighton cast.

It’s easy to learn, and you can use this technique in a crowd. Let’s learn this technique step by step (If you are left-handed, then you need to reverse these steps, and you will be all done):

Casting Technique
  • Let’s use a clock face which targets at 12 o’clock.
  • Your left foot will point at 12 o’clock and your right leg at 3 o’clock.
  • Place your sinker halfway down the length of the rod. After that, swing it towards your foot which will place it at a 6 o’clock position on the ground.
  • Now you need to put the tip of your rod at 5 o’clock behind you.
  • You are already halfway done. Now maintain the tension on the line and bending your right arm.
  • Now you need to raise your left-hand high. This will form a V shape between the rod and the line.
  • Now look above your target, and without going forward, perform a punch-pull (it means you need to punch out with your right hand and pull it with your left).

It’s done. If you can master this and perform it correctly, then 100 yards casting won’t be an issue.

Safety Issue

  • Be careful of your surroundings at the time of casting. If anyone is close behind you, then inform him to go a safe distance.
  • You should use a thumb guard (baitcasting) or finger guard (spinning) at the time of casting. Otherwise, you may get hurt. Better to use leather gloves which give additional protection.

Pro Tips

Do you need anything more? Yes. You need to practice harder. It’s one of the most common issues we forget most of the time. Without practice, theoretical knowledge won’t help much.

The more you practice, the better you can cast your bait caster further. Casting further gives an additional advantage compared to others. You can go deeper and will get less competition. It will help you catch bigger fish. If you are in a competition, then you will have more chances to win it.

With these pieces of information and techniques, your chance of casting bait aster at a maximum distance will soon be a reality.

Final Thoughts

You must tune your baitcasting reel properly. If the reel is faulty then fix the faulty reel first and after that start your operation. Everything is related to tackle selection. Make sure to purchase a good reel for casting at a distance. If you don’t know what reel to choose, you can always check out our best baitcasting reel guide.

As for me, I prefer the KastKing Speed Demon Pro, which is a budget-friendly baitcasting reel for beginners. As you know, not all reels are created equal. You are free to do your own research.

Keep in mind that there are many parts in a reel that allow you to cast easier. Also, you will need to make a lot of casts to really nail down the right technique. And that’s all there is to it. Hopefully, this article on how to cast bait caster far will help you cast far into the horizon.
