Fishing is a popular sport that is ideal for both relaxation and adventure. It’s ideal for having fun with family and friends. Fishing from a boat or a kayak is way more adventurous than fishing from the shore.
But among the two, which one is more thrilling, boat fishing or kayak fishing? Aren’t they fundamentally the same?
Technically, yes. Boat fishing and kayak fishing are fundamentally the same. But there are significant differences between them.
Boat fishing is viable on the bigger water bodies such as big lakes, rivers, or in the ocean, whereas kayak fishing is limited to small or medium-sized sources. Boats are bigger, more powerful, expensive, and require constant fuel. But kayaks are mostly manually operated, sleek, and budget friendly.
Which one is more thrilling, though? It totally depends on your taste. Some people enjoy boat fishing, whereas to some others, the kayak is the GOAT.
Generally, kayaks, being smaller, lighter, and sleeker, can access a lot of the inland water bodies that are off-limits for boats. Thus, kayakers get access to fish species that are out of reach for boat users.
But at the same time, being smaller, less powerful, and manually operated, kayaks have a hard time going beyond the smaller, shallower water.
Kayak Fishing Vs. Boat Fishing
Before deciding which one you want, think thoroughly. Consider things like where you want to go fishing, your budget, how many companions you will have, and so on. Both the boat and the kayak have their pros and cons.
You cannot get one and have it all. So, what are the differences between boat-fishing and kayak-fishing?
Boat-Fishing
A fishing boat is an ideal vehicle for professional fishermen who travels to the deep seas or river regularly. Nearly all of the fishing boats have an engine and operate with either fuel or battery (mostly fossil fuel).
So, it’s easy to drive them, and you don’t have to spend your strength to get to the fishing spot. Fishing boats are big and powerful. They can travel fast and can easily cover long distances in no time.
But they are bulky and expensive. A decent fishing boat will easily cost you in five-digits. You can safely add a few more for the trailer that you’ll need to carry the boat to the shore and back.
Kayak-Fishing
A kayak is a narrow watercraft that is propelled by a paddle. You will need to either pedal with your legs or paddle with your hands to run it. Your physical strength is the engine for this small craft.
They are lightweight, slim, and sleek in design. Kayaks are mostly used for sport, but dedicated fishing-kayaks are also popular. Fishing kayaks are smaller than boats and obviously not as powerful.
Their top speed has a tough hard limit, and you should not even expect to cover a long-distance journey with a kayak on a regular basis. But because of their design, you can travel to otherwise impossible lands. This opens up a strong possibility for uncontested fishing ground and species.
Fishing Kayak Or Fishing Boat?
If you are into fishing and want to get yourself a vessel but not sure which one to opt for, here is a list of things you should consider before locking in –
Space And Comfort
Fishing from a boat provides much better options than a kayak. A boat has enough space to accommodate all the fishing tools and gears, essentials, foods and drinks, emergency kits, and everything else you might need, and a back-up set for everything (Yes). If you get a boat, you will have-
- Enough space for carrying a ton of items with you
- The freedom to bring a few buddies on the adventure
- More comfortable seating and moving around
With a kayak, your options are very limited. You will have to pack your belongings and fishing gear very efficiently – it is better to take only the necessary fishing equipment. Kayak is lightweight and so you will need to be very efficient in not only choosing the necessary items but also maintaining balance when storing them.
You have a narrow space in a kayak so moving around is not much of an option. It’s more challenging. However, many fishermen love challenges more than comfort. Kayak is a good choice for them.
But it has its benefits. You can fish alone without worrying. It can cover many areas and shallow water where fishing boats are unable to go. And you don’t have to worry about fuel running out, technical difficulty, and the nonstop engine noise.
In short, fishing boats are spacious, comfortable, and the ideal craft for the group. Kayaks are cramped, challenging, and ideal for anglers who prefer to venture solo.
Fishing Location
Fishing boats and kayaks give you different kinds of access and options in fishing locations. If you want to go to the deep sea or far away from the shore, fishing boats are pretty much the only option. Fishing boats have engines, usually run with fossil fuel.
With a boat, you can pack and go for multiple days in the deep-sea areas. You can catch a large number of fish and store them in your boat. Kayaks are out of the question for these tasks.
But kayaks are lightweight and portable. You can easily transport it using your car and deploy them on your own without assistance. This is a major advantage of kayaks over boats.
Kayaks cannot take you to the deep sea, but they can take you to the shallow water and inlets that are inaccessible with boats. The narrow and sleek shape allows it to access and navigate shallow water with ease. You can explore remote destinations.
Safety Regards
It’s an easy answer. Boats beat kayaks every time when it comes to safety. Kayak is mainly for adventures and fishing sports. You can easily get capsized if you are not careful. You will have to remain vigilant from animals like sharks, poisonous snakes, alligators, etc.
Boats are, hands down, the safest of the two. They have a larger frame with a wider hull. Its center of gravity is way more stable than a kayak. There’s no need to fear getting capsized without a storm or strong current. Animals like sharks, poisonous snakes, alligators are no match unless you decide to do something stupid. So, if you are a newcomer or big concerned with safety, go for a boat.
Pricing
There’s not much to say about the price. An average fishing boat will easily cost you in the five-digits, whereas you can manage a decent fishing kayak in the three-digit range.
Are the boats overpriced? No. If you consider all the benefits and perks a boat provides, then they do cost reasonably. It’s just there are more a boat offers than a kayak. But options and freedom are not always the deciding factor.
If you are in a limited budget situation and cannot cross the four-digit boundary, then I’d highly recommend getting a high-quality fishing kayak. They’ll serve you better than a cheap boat.
Conclusion
Boats and kayaks are two of the many watercrafts people use for fishing. Both of them have their perks and drawbacks. Despite them being used for the same purpose, they are used in separate scenarios. It should be obvious which one will suit your needs.
If you are still not sure, I’ll recommend joining a fishing club and trying out both of the vessels a handful of times and see for yourself. If that’s out of the question, then I’ll say, get a fishing boat if you have easy access to and don’t mind the sea.
You’ll hardly go wrong with it. Otherwise, get a kayak. The boat is really not ideal for inland fishing. And that’s all there is to it for our kayak fishing vs. boat fishing article.
